Our next step in sustainable flower growing
From Silver to Gold, and what that really means
Back to storiesive of our seven flower farms in Kenya have recently achieved KFC Gold certification. It is a milestone we are incredibly proud of, and an important one for the future of our flowers. But what does KFC Gold actually stand for, and why does it matter?
What is KFC certification?
The Kenya Flower Council (KFC) is the national body that represents and supports the floriculture sector in Kenya. Their certification programme, the Flowers and Ornamentals Sustainability Standard (F.O.S.S.), assesses farms on three core pillars: the environment, people, and good governance.
The aim is straightforward, growing flowers in a way that respects both people and nature, while helping secure the long-term future of our industry. Farms can reach two levels, Silver or Gold.
What does Silver mean?
A farm that achieves Silver meets key standards relating to:
- Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) such as careful use of plant protection products, water management, waste handling, soil health and strong cultivation standards.
- Working conditions including employee welfare, safety, health and hygiene.
- Environmental care protection of natural areas, responsible use of resources, and control of emissions.
In short, Silver shows that a farm operates responsibly and in line with an internationally recognised standard.
What does Gold mean?
Gold goes beyond the Silver requirements. It is awarded to farms that can demonstrate they are working at the next level of sustainability, social responsibility and professional management. To achieve Gold, a farm must show that sustainability is embedded throughout the entire organisation.
Some of the additional requirements include:
- Stronger social standards such as community programmes, training and career development, access to healthcare and clean water.
- Environment and biodiversity further reductions in chemical use, active composting, supporting biodiversity and local ecosystems, measuring greenhouse gas emissions, and advanced water treatment systems like wetlands.
- Economic and operational strength including a solid business plan with clear performance goals and risk analysis.
- Skilled and trained management managers and supervisors with specialised knowledge and certified training, for example in pest control or fertiliser management, plus internal audit systems.
Gold certification means the flowers are not only well grown, they come from a place where people and the environment receive extra care. Gold is not just a certificate on the wall, it reflects a culture of responsibility, craftsmanship and continuous improvement. It shows that quality is woven into everyday work.
A journey that continues
Five of our seven Kenyan farms now carry the Gold status. The remaining two are well on their way, targeting to be certified Gold at the next audit within 2026.
At Marginpar, we believe that good flowers grow from healthy soil and good care, and that every step forward, however small, strengthens the whole chain. From our fields to your vase.
